Microsoft has developed an AI tool for creating realistic diplomatic faces
Microsoft Research Asia has announced the release of a new experimental artificial intelligence tool, VASA-1, that can create believable diplomatic facial expressions using only a photo.
Here's What We Know
This tool can simulate facial expressions, head movements, and lip movements, giving the impression that the person in the photo is actually speaking or singing. Although the head movements may look a bit robotic, the level of believability is surprising. However, the developers are refraining from releasing the tool or API publicly until they can ensure that it is used responsibly.
The research team emphasised their opposition to any activity aimed at creating deceptive or harmful content about real people. Instead, they see potential uses for the tool for communication and therapeutic support, or as company bots.
This announcement comes after Microsoft was forced to take its WizardLM-2 artificial intelligence model offline due to a failed toxicity test. This incident highlights the importance of thorough testing and monitoring of new technologies before they are widely released to the market.
