On the eve of the annual military exercises between Manila and Washington, a Chinese drone was spotted near the Philippine border.

Here's What We Know

A local journalist in the Philippine Sea was the first to spot the drone and record its movements. These findings provided the first evidence of China's interest in the region. The military exercises between the US and the Philippines are intended to strengthen cooperation between the countries, while China is concerned about the presence of an "adversary" in a region it considers its own.

According to reports, the description matches a Chinese-made WZ-7 drone belonging to the People's Liberation Army of China.

It is worth noting that tensions between China and the Philippines have sharply escalated over maritime disputes. Beijing claims almost all of the South China Sea, including areas near the Philippines, Vietnam, Malaysia, Indonesia, and Brunei.
