Apple has acquired Datakalab, a Paris-based startup specialising in artificial intelligence data compression and computer vision technology. According to French business magazine Challenges, the acquisition closed in December 2023.

Here's What We Know

Datakalab is an expert in deep learning algorithms with low power consumption and efficient execution time. The startup develops artificial intelligence and computer vision data compression technologies for use on devices.

The company describes its products as providing industry-leading compression and adaptation capabilities for fast, energy-efficient and accurate deployment of embedded computer vision. Prior to the acquisition, Datakalab had between 10 and 20 employees.

Datakalab previously worked with the French government to deploy artificial intelligence tools into Paris transport systems to track mask wearers. The company has also worked with partners like Disney and holds several patents related to AI compression and vision technologies.

Though neither Apple nor Datakalab has officially confirmed the deal. According to the report, the acquisition was reported to the European Commission this month.

The two founders of Datakalab have not moved to Apple, but several other employees have joined the tech giant.

The acquisition comes at a time when Apple is expected to unveil a set of artificial intelligence features in iOS 18 later this year. Datakalab's advanced computer vision and facial recognition technologies could also play a role in Apple's future ambitions for its Vision Pro headset and features such as Photos and Face ID.
