Atari has announced the revival of the once famous Infogrames publishing brand, founded back in the 1980s
Atari has announced the revival of the once famous Infogrames publishing brand.
Here's What We Know
To understand the meaning of what is happening, a brief excursion into history is necessary
So, Infogrames was founded in France in 1983 and its most famous game was Alone in the Dark in 1992.
A few years after the release of the horror game, Infogrames started active publishing activity and absorption of other developers. Cult games such as RoboCop and Batman versions of the 80s, Duke Nukem and Unreal Tournament were released under its label.
In 2001, Infogrames absorbed Atari and gained access to its franchises. Over time, the French publisher renamed most of its divisions as different variations of Atari, and in 2009 dropped its own Infogrames brand in favour of Atari.
The company went bankrupt in the past decade, but managed to recover. It's been feeling more confident lately, has acquired several studios, and has now announced that it's reviving the Infogrames brand.
What's next.
Infogrames will return to publishing and will focus on games that don't fit into Atari's core lineup. The company plans to acquire game rights, release re-releases and sequels to once iconic franchises, and gain control of a number of developers.
The first acquisition by the revived Infogrames was the rights to the indie game Totally Reliable Delivery Service (2021).
