The Stellar Blade director is aware of the active discussions about the protagonist's appearance, but believes that such games should exist
Only the lazy have not seen the heated discussions around the appearance of the main character from Stellar Blade. Some say that it is normal, while others want this to be avoided in games. What do the authors of the game think about this?
Here's What We Know
The game's director, Kim Hyun-tae, is aware of the controversy on the Internet around the appearance of the game's protagonist, Eva. He is not surprised by this, especially considering that modern video games focus on realistic portrayal of people.
"The game is virtual reality, and I think we should be able to see things in virtual space that are not so realistic. We are already familiar with reality, we live in it. So when we play a game, I want to be able to see something that is different from what I experience. There are many things that are more realistic, and that should also be respected. And I think games like Stellar Blade should exist," Kim said.
Kim defines Eve as a Korean woman who was designed by Koreans, modelled on a Korean woman, voiced by a Korean woman, and in a Korean-made game. She is Korean in every sense that this phrase can mean, and Kim is well aware that she represents only a single, narrow definition of beauty, because beauty norms in Korea are significantly different from other Asian countries.
It would be more accurate to say that the requirements for appearance in this country are too high. There are advertisements for cosmetics and plastic surgery everywhere, and children can read GQ magazines instead of fiction books. So before criticising something, it is important to understand at least some of the subtleties of the culture that creates a product.
"By offering this game to players, I have the opportunity to show the world how Korean beauty can differ from Asian beauty, how Asians differ from each other," Kim said.
