TikTok could face a ban in Europe
In light of recent developments, popular video sharing app TikTok may face a ban not only in the US but also in Europe. TikTok is currently under pressure from the US and European governments.
Here's What We Know
US President Joe Biden has signed a bill that requires TikTok's owner, ByteDance, to sell its company so that the app can continue to operate in the US. At the same time, during a debate in Maastricht, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said that banning TikTok in Europe "is not out of the question." She also added that the commission was "the first institution in the world to ban TikTok on our work phones". This shows that the commission is aware of the potential dangers associated with TikTok.
If the situation escalates, TikTok could lose a significant portion of its users if it is blocked in both the US and Europe. However, if ByteDance sells TikTok to appease governments, the company could lose a lot of money.
TikTok is already in conflict with the European government right now. It is currently dealing with an investigation from the European government because of the rewards system in the TikTok Lite app. The EU Commission has also already investigated TikTok before because of the lack of age verification mechanisms and its addictive features. Von der Leyen's comments come amid a string of bad news for TikTok, especially in the US.
