Jason Schreier: new layoffs are planned at Xbox studios, and Tango Gameworks worked on Hi-Fi Rush sequel
Last week, we actively discussed Sony and its decision to tie the PSN to PC, but after the news that Microsoft is closing Tango Gameworks, Arkane Austin, and other studios, all attention has shifted to Xbox.
We wrote that Microsoft still hasn't decided whether to add new Call of Duty titles to Game Pass, and employees are afraid that they will be the next to be fired. Now, Jason Schreier has shared information about what is happening inside the corporation.
Here's What We Know
This week, Xbox began offering voluntary severance deals to producers, testers, and other employees of ZeniMax, which it acquired in 2020 for $7.5 billion.
Anonymous employees told Jason that Tango Gameworks was working on a sequel to the game, but the studio was closed.
During a meeting with ZeniMax employees on Wednesday morning, Xbox president Matt Booty praised Hi-Fi Rush but did not specify why the company closed the studio.
Booty added that the closure of Arkane Austin was not related to the failure of Redfall. Although Arkane Austin was planning to return to its roots by introducing a new single-player game in the "immersive simulation" genre, for example, a new part of Dishonored.
Game Pass is also in some trouble, as the number of subscribers is growing much less than Xbox expected.
