AT&T, T-Mobile and Verizon fined for misleading customers
The largest US telecom operators AT&T, T-Mobile and Verizon are once again facing fines. It's been less than a month since they were fined by the Federal Communications Commission for selling their customers' location data without their consent and here they are again being fined.
Here's What We Know
This time, the trio of carriers have to pay a total fine of $10.22 million to a group of states for misleading customers about their unlimited plans and promotions for free phones. AT&T, Verizon, and T-Mobile deceived millions of consumers by making false promises about free phones and "unlimited" plans that weren't actually so. Big companies are not exempt from the law and cannot deceive consumers into paying for services they will never receive.
To settle the lawsuits, AT&T, T-Mobile and Verizon agreed to advertise their plans as "unlimited" only if there really is no limit to the amount of data customers can use in a month. The agreement also mentions that all ads must "clearly and conspicuously" state that speed limits may apply and exactly when they will take effect. Finally, all three operators must appoint a "dedicated representative" to deal with customer complaints.
