Germany wants to restore conscription
The German Ministry of Defence has prepared proposals to restore conscription for citizens of the country.
Here's What We Know
According to Tagesspiegel, the proposals are very different, ranging from optimising the existing procedure to full and compulsory service for men and women.
The first one involves optimising the procedure by sending out information materials to adult citizens who can join the army on a voluntary basis. The second option proposes to oblige citizens to fill out questionnaires and possibly undergo a medical examination, but this procedure remains voluntary for women.
The third model envisages mandatory online questionnaires for all men and women over the age of 18, as well as military or alternative service.
German Defence Minister Boris Pistorius will soon submit his proposals for changes. At the same time, the German parliament is discussing the possible reintroduction of conscription. Politicians from the country's ruling parties have already declared their readiness to discuss this issue.
