Romania to supply its F-16s with the latest AIM-9X air-to-air missiles
Romania has signed a deal with the United States to purchase $70 million worth of modern AIM-9X Sidewinder Block II air-to-air missiles for its F-16 multirole fighter jets/.
Here's What We Know
The exact number of weapons is not yet known, but the deal is not limited to the supply of missiles: it also includes logistics services, spare parts, training materials and technical support.
Romania's Minister of National Defence, Angel Tilvar, noted that the deal will not only strengthen the country's defence capabilities, but also ensure a high degree of compatibility with similar structures of the US military. Such steps are important for ensuring the security of not only the national airspace but also the entire Black Sea region.
In the autumn of 2021, it became known that Norway had decided to decommission all 57 of its F-16AM/BM Fighting Falcon fighters, and Romania was interested in these aircraft.
Eventually, Norway and Romania signed a contract for the sale of 32 aircraft worth $388 million, including spare parts, equipment and maintenance.
