For those who have always dreamed of being able to have a drink with friends without worrying about the consequences, this news may seem like a dream come true. Researchers from ETH Zurich have announced a revolutionary development - an edible gel designed to prevent intoxication from alcohol.

Here's What We Know

This gel, which has been successfully tested on mice, can reduce blood alcohol levels by up to 50 per cent and protect the body from its harmful effects. Although the research is still ongoing, scientists are confident in their development, even filing for a patent.

The uniqueness of this gel lies in its composition. It is based on simple ingredients: iron, gold and whey. Using ordinary whey proteins, the researchers created long, thin fibrils that are added to a solvent of salt and water to create the gel itself.

Here's How It Works

The main advantage of this gel is its ability to be absorbed slowly, allowing it to work for longer. Catalysts, such as iron atoms, are used to break down alcohol. The gel reacts with alcohol to turn it into acetic acid, preventing the body from absorbing most of the alcohol.

No clinical trial schedule has yet been announced, and the researchers published their findings in the journal Nature Nanotechnology.
