Microsoft optimises Windows 11 for the age of AI and Arm
Microsoft has announced significant updates to Windows 11 that are designed to improve support for Arm-based hardware and artificial intelligence.
Here's What We Know
The updated operating system includes a new emulator called Prism for running x86 and x64 applications, as well as new AI APIs built directly into the OS.
Microsoft introduced two new computer devices based on Arm. The company rebuilt Windows 11 with AI and Arm in mind, including a new kernel, compiler, and emulator. These changes are aimed at improving the interaction of the OS with the Arm architecture and efficient use of AI capabilities.
Windows now recognises neural processing units (NPUs) in the same way as CPUs and GPUs. Additionally, new AI APIs enable developers to create more integrated and powerful AI applications.
The newly announced laptops will be powered by Qualcomm Snapdragon X Elite processor, which features NPUs capable of 45 trillion operations per second (TOPS). This technology will be used for functions such as Recall, which allows the user to find information on the computer using cues they remember. Live Captions will also be introduced, which provides live subtitles for audio coming from the PC in English.
