SpaceX presented the first video call using the Starlink Direct to Cell satellite service. Unmodified phones were used in the test.

Here's What We Know

SpaceX has been working on this service for several years, and Direct to Cell is expected to be launched later this year.

Since 2022, SpaceX has been actively cooperating with T-Mobile and other international operators to provide customers with satellite communications. The corporation has now successfully completed an important stage in the development of this service.

On X (formerly Twitter), SpaceX posted a video of an employee making a video call with a colleague using an unmodified phone connected to Direct to Cell. This is the first successful video call under this project.

Two months ago, SpaceX sent a letter to the FCC reporting on its testing success. Although the call quality was a bit fuzzy, it was clear that the service was working steadily during the test.

When Direct to Cell launches later this year, the service will initially support text messaging only. Voice and data are expected to follow in 2025.
