Volvo and Aurora unveil Volvo VNL's first self-driving truck at ACT Expo in Las Vegas
Volvo and Aurora have unveiled their first production self-driving truck at the ACT Expo in Las Vegas.
Here's What We Know
The truck, the Volvo VNL, is equipped with Aurora's Level 4 autonomous driving system, which uses high-resolution cameras, image radars, LiDAR sensors and many other sensors. Aurora's technology has been successfully tested on billions of miles of virtual routes and millions of commercial miles on real roads.
This event marks the start of mass production of autonomous trucks just three years after the announcement of the partnership between the companies.
Pilot programmes for Volvo's autonomous trucks are planned for this year, and Aurora already has experience of working with major companies such as FedEx and Uber Freight.
The vehicle has steering, braking, communication, computing, power management, energy storage and vehicle control systems that guarantee a high level of safety.
