AMD will rename the next-generation Zen 5 Strix Point processor the Ryzen AI 300
AMD has made changes to the branding strategy of its mobile processors. According to the latest reports, the next generation of Zen 5 chips will be released under a new name "Ryzen AI", accompanied by a number from the 300 series.
Here's What We Know
This decision comes after leaks from Asus that indicated the possible use of the 100-series numbering for the first Ryzen AI processors. The name change may be due to AMD's desire to get ahead of Intel, whose next-generation Lunar Lake/Arrow Lake processors have been given the "worse" 200-series numbering. AMD may also be keen to emphasise the integration of a neural processing unit (NPU) into the new chips, a key element for Microsoft's Copilot+ artificial intelligence PC.
All AMD mobile processors are expected to be released under the "Ryzen AI" brand, including Strix Point, the codename for the next generation of Ryzen mobile processors that will replace the Ryzen 8040 series. Strix Point is expected to feature Zen 5 architecture, RDNA 3.5 graphics and XDNA2 NPU with a performance of around 30 TOPS. Also, Strix Halo, a high-performance mobile hybrid processor designed to compete with Apple's M3/M4 processors, may be released under the new brand.
These changes reflect AMD's strategy of mirroring competitors' branding strategies, especially in the motherboard space and could lead to further changes in the industry.
