Scientists from China have developed a smartwatch with a sweat sensor
Scientists have developed a new generation of smartwatch with a sweat sensor that could revolutionise the way users track their health. The watch, developed at the Institute of Solid State Physics at the Hefei Institute of Physical Sciences of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, is capable of continuously analysing sweat to identify chemicals such as potassium, sodium and calcium.
Here's What We Know
The basic principle of the watch lies in its microfluidic chip and standardised sensor array, which allow for the simultaneous analysis of multiple ions in sweat.
Assessing ion concentrations can be key to developing personalised fluid and electrolyte replacement strategies, helping to maintain the body's electrolyte balance and prevent heat-related cramps.
This technology could also be useful in developing new approaches to measuring exercise intensity and predicting muscle fatigue.
