As expected, a new Gears of War game was announced at the Xbox Games Showcase, but this is not the sixth part and not a collection of remasters, which has long been rumoured, but a prequel to the very first part.

Here's What We Know

Microsoft and The Coalition studio presented the debut trailer of Gears of War: E-Day, which immediately answers all the questions:

  • the main character of the game will once again be brutal and charismatic Marcus Fenix, who is accompanied by his mate Dom Santiago;
  • The events of the game will unfold on the eve of E-day or Emergence Day, the name of which refers to the beginning of the war between mankind and the alien race Locus;
  • The setting is the planet Sera, where the events of the rest of Gears of War unfolded.

Even the name of the game - Gears of War, not Gears, as the last games of the franchise were called, emphasises that the developers are returning to their roots.

Flashback

It is E-day that gives rise to all the events in the game.

In just 26 hours after the Locust attack, 25% of the world's population was wiped out and this event had such an impact on people's lives that it became the beginning of a new calendar system. For example, the events of the first part of Gears of War begin 14 AE - 14 years after the Rift Day.

When We Can Expect It

Unfortunately, The Coalition studio didn't give a release date for the Gears of War: E-Day shooter and didn't provide a list of platforms, but apparently it will be available on PC and Xbox Series at least.
