The Royal Australian Navy (RAN) has equipped its missile destroyer HMAS Sydney with a Naval Strike Missile.

Here's What We Know

Australia acquired the Kongsberg anti-ship missile in January 2023 as a replacement for the Harpoon on Anzac frigates and Hobart destroyers.

Several warships of both classes have already integrated the missiles, the Australian Ministry of Defence said, citing Navy Chief Vice Admiral Mark Hammond.

"This year, we have delivered Naval Strike Missiles to the fleet, but not all ships, but we have started this activity," the newspaper quoted Hammond as saying.

Flashback

Naval Strike Missiles have a range of 200 km and greater manoeuvrability than competitors. The weapon uses inertial navigation, GPS navigation and terrain navigation. It also uses an infrared imaging system for guidance.
