Dragon Age: The Veilguard will not feature imported saves, but players will be able to recreate their actions from past instalments of the series

Fans of BioWare's role-playing games, Dragon Age in particular, are used to being able to import saves from previous games at the start of a new instalment in the series, so that the storyline of the sequel takes into account and adapts to the player's previous decisions.

This system was convenient and accessible, but it had a number of drawbacks, the main one being the need to store saves from a game that the user may have played a decade or more ago. BioWare understands the problem and will revisit this concept in Dragon Age: The Veilguard.

Here's What We Know

In an interview with IGN, Dragon Age: The Veilguard game director Corinne Busche revealed that the usual importing of saves will not take place in the game. Instead, gamers will be shown a short video retelling of the events of the previous three parts at the beginning of the game, then during the narrative, players will be able to indicate what decisions they made, for example, in Dragon Age: Inquisition and thus recreate the whole story of the franchise and adjust the further events in The Veilguard to it. It all sounds a bit complicated, but for the sake of understanding, let's note that the same system was used in The Witcher 3, provided that the player didn't use imported saves.

In The Veilguard players will constantly encounter references, characters and mentions of specific events from the past parts, so the fact that the previous games were released more than 10 years ago shouldn't be an obstacle for a comfortable playthrough

The reminders will be in the form of Tarot cards.

Bouchette did not specify whether the main characters from Dragon Age 1 and 2 will appear in the game, but hinted that some of them do participate in the plot of the new story.

Importantly, Dragon Age: The Veilguard doesn't require an internet connection, as it doesn't have any network options and even restoring the timeline of events from past instalments is available offline. There will be no microtransactions in the game either.

When We Can Expect It

Dragon Age: The Veilguard will be released this autumn on PC, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series.
