Douce: "releasing Astro Bot on PlayStation VR2 was never in the cards"
The launch of Astro Bot Rescue Mission in 2018 drew significant attention to the platform mascot game, followed by the positive reception of Astro's Playroom in 2020. Now, the series will make its full debut on consoles with Astro Bot later this year. According to creative director Nicolas Doucet, this was always in the plans.
Here's What We Know
In an interview with Push Square, Doucet shared that after completing Astro's Playroom, the team immediately started working on a full-fledged console game, with no plans to support PS VR2. Developing a platformer for VR and not for VR requires completely different approaches.
"We focused 100% on this one from the get-go after Astro’s Playroom. It was the hope that if it was welcome, it could be a platformer that stands on its own feet, and we could go off to make a bigger version of it. So no, [PSVR2] was not a consideration.".
Doucet added that in his opinion, a VR version should be fully developed for VR, and a non-VR version should be developed for non-VR. He believes that some games can be hybrid, but their design philosophy for each is very different.
When We Can Expect It
Astro Bot will be released on the 6th of September for PlayStation 5.
