Not only men: US plans to register women for military service
On Friday, 14 June, the US House of Representatives approved a bill on automatic military registration of men and women.
Here's What We Know
It is expected that the amendments to the Military Service Act will also provide for the registration of women for military service under the Selective Service System. However, so far, only men are required to register, regardless of their gender identity.
It is worth noting that the United States has already tried to introduce military registration for women, but it was declared unconstitutional.
Allowing women to register for the military was discussed at the level of the US government: a congressionally mandated commission recommended in March 2020 that women should be eligible for the draft. And in September 2021, the House of Representatives passed the National Defence Authorisation Act for Fiscal Year 2022, which included an amendment that "all Americans between the ages of 18 and 25 must register for selective service".
Earlier, we wrote that the US wants to register men for military service as a recruitment crisis is brewing.
