Social media apps may receive warning labels
The US Surgeon General Vivek Murthy has launched an initiative to require the introduction of warning labels on social media platforms.
Here's What We Know
In a commentary for The New York Times, Murthy argues that this is a necessary step to recognise the potential threats to mental health posed by the use of social media, especially among teenagers.
He emphasises that research has shown that active use of social media is associated with an increased risk of anxiety, depression and negative body image among teenagers.
Nevertheless, Murthy points out that the introduction of warning labels will require the support of Congress. While lawmakers in various states have already expressed support for initiatives aimed at protecting children from the negative effects of social media, national support is not yet a certainty.
