The Security Policy Committee of the Swiss National Council, the lower house of parliament, has approved a proposal that would allow indirect arms exports to Ukraine.

Here's What We Know

The proposal was supported by 10 members of the parliamentary committee, the same number of members voted against it, and four abstained.

The decisive vote was cast by the committee's chairperson, the Social Democratic Party's Seiler Graf. At a press conference, she said that the majority of committee members wanted to amend the current law that prevents the re-export of arms to Ukraine.

The draft law will now be submitted to the Swiss National Council, but it is unclear whether it will have enough votes to pass. And even if it does, the Council of Cantons will have to vote on it later.

If approved, countries such as Germany, Denmark and Spain would be allowed to transfer Swiss weapons to Ukraine in the future.
