The US Navy has connected the aircraft carrier USS Abraham Lincoln to a cloud service
The US Navy wants to connect warships to cloud services. The workability of this concept was tested on the example of aircraft carrier USS Abraham Lincoln (CVN 72).
Here's What We Know
In the US, there is the Flank Speed project, which allows military and government agencies to work together in cloud services. The Nimitz-class ship was connected as part of the Flank Speed Edge pilot programme, which is an offshoot of Flank Speed.
The aircraft carrier will be able to transfer terabytes of data daily using P-LEO (Proliferated Low Earth Orbit) satellite services. To be more precise, the pilot project envisages the ability to transfer up to 5 TB of data every day. For this purpose, a gigabit connection to satellites in low Earth orbit has been realised.
The crew of the USS Abraham Lincoln (CVN 72) can use IP-telephony and transmit various information. Software updates are done remotely without the need to go into port, and only three technicians are needed to manage the infrastructure.
