Politico: US allows Ukraine to use US weapons throughout Russia, not just on the border
The US has said that Ukraine could use US weapons to hit any Russian forces attacking from abroad - not just those in the region around Kharkiv.
Here's What We Know
The slight change comes just weeks after the US secretly gave Kyiv the green light to retaliate against Russia with a new offensive in the Kharkiv region. At the time, US officials stressed that the policy was limited to the Kharkiv region, among other restrictions.
Since then, Ukrainian troops have used American weapons on several occasions, for example to destroy some targets in the city of Belgorod, and thanks to the permission of the Americans, the Ukrainian Defence Forces have been able to contain the Russian offensive. However, Ukrainian and European officials have been pressing the US to further ease its restrictions, allowing Ukraine to strike anywhere inside Russia.
National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan said that the agreement with Ukraine on the use of US weapons in Russia applies "wherever Russian forces cross the border from the Russian side into the Ukrainian side to try to seize additional Ukrainian territory."
It is worth noting that in recent days, Russia has claimed that it may soon launch an offensive against the northeastern city of Sumy, which is also located near the Russian border. If this happens, the policy will be applied there as well.
