Contract worth $920m: Romania buys K9 Thunder self-propelled artillery systems from Hanwha Defence

The Romanian Ministry of Defence has signed a contract with the Korean company Hanwha Defense for the supply of K9 Thunder self-propelled artillery systems.

Information was shared by the publication Defence Romania. We are talking about 54 self-propelled units. The contract is designed for $920 million. The systems will be produced jointly with the Romanian industry. By the way, Romania will become the eighth international operator of K9 Thunder.

Flashback

The K9 Thunder is a modern self-propelled howitzer developed by South Korean company Hanwha Defence. The K9 Thunder was put into service in the late 1990s. It is designed to provide powerful and mobile fire support. The howitzer is equipped with a 155 mm gun with a 52 calibre barrel length, which allows it to fire at a range of up to 40 kilometres using active-jet projectiles.

The K9 Thunder has high rate of fire and accuracy due to its automated loading system and advanced fire control systems. The vehicle is equipped with a diesel engine and an armoured hull that protects the crew from shrapnel and small arms fire.
