The information was shared by the Infodefensa publication. The Spanish division of GDELS Santa Bárbara Sistemas has informed the government of its country that it is ready to launch production of combat vehicles at a plant in the city of Trubia. The company is capable of producing up to 50 vehicles per year. Unfortunately, the final decision from the Spanish Ministry of Defence is not yet available.
By the way, we recently wrote that Ukraine wants to buy a test batch of ASCOD infantry fighting vehicles and localise their production in the future.
Flashback
ASCOD (Austrian Spanish Cooperation Development) is a modern infantry fighting vehicle developed jointly by Steyr-Daimler-Puch (Austria) and Santa Bárbara Sistemas (Spain). The ASCOD was put into service in the 1990s. The BMP is designed for transporting and protecting infantry, as well as for fire support on the battlefield. The vehicle is equipped with a diesel engine. It has high mobility and cross-country capability.
The ASCOD has a modular design, allowing it to be adapted to different tasks and requirements. It is armed with a 30 or 40 mm automatic cannon, machine guns and anti-tank missiles. ASCOD is actively used by the armed forces of Spain and Austria, and is also exported to other countries. For example, the UK, where it is known as Ajax.
