In addition to Brimstone 3 aircraft missiles, the German Ministry of Defence will purchase missiles for Stinger man-portable anti-aircraft systems for the army.

Here's What We Know

This was reported by the publication Hartpunkt. The contract is designed for 395 million euros. It will include 506 anti-aircraft missiles FIM-92 in modification K Block 1. They will replace the missiles that Germany transferred to Ukraine. They plan to fulfil part of the contract until 2028-2029.

Flashback

The Stinger is a man-portable surface-to-air missile system developed by US company General Dynamics (now Raytheon) in the 1970s. The Stinger was put into service in 1981. The MANPADS is designed to engage low-flying aerial targets. For example, aeroplanes and helicopters. The system is equipped with an infrared homing head, which allows the missile to capture and engage targets by following their thermal radiation.

The Stinger is highly mobile and easy to use, making it an effective air defence tool for infantry units. The system is used in more than 20 countries and has been used extensively in various conflicts, including the war in Afghanistan and Ukraine.
