Images of the first Pixel Fold prototype have surfaced online
A prototype of the Pixel Fold, developed by Google a year ahead of the Pixel Fold's June 2023 release, has surfaced in images online.
Here's What We Know
This prototype has a design typical of the Pixel 6. It's called "Pipit" and is almost identical to the first generation Pixel Fold, except for the Pixel 6-compliant camera strip. The prototype features two main lenses: A 12.2-megapixel IMX363 and a 12-megapixel IMX386 for the ultra-wide-angle camera.
Google also experimented with stylus support, but then eventually abandoned the idea. The prototype was powered by a first-generation Tensor processor and an Exynos 5123 modem. This confirms plans to launch the device alongside the Pixel 6 series.
Google may have delayed the launch of its tablet and foldable device for a year to finalise the software and hardware. Despite the cancellation, the "pipit" served as the basis for the first Pixel Fold, and perhaps the upcoming Pixel 9 Pro Fold will continue Google's tradition of foldable device improvements.
