Envision's augmented reality smart binoculars, which can identify thousands of stars and over a million locations, are available on Kickstarter
Unistellar has unveiled a binoculars called Envision on the crowdfunding site Kickstarter. But it's not a simple binocular, it's a smart binocular.
Here's What We Know
The binoculars feature 50mm lenses from Nikon and use augmented reality to overlay information about what you're looking at. For example, tell you about constellations, spell out the names of mountains, and indicate the distance to other planets.
In total, the binoculars can identify 200,000 objects in the night sky and more than a million unique landmarks, including mountains and trails. Real-time contextual information about what you're looking at is overlaid on top of the image.
Envision binoculars connect to a smartphone via Bluetooth and use that device's GPS and other sensors to determine where the user is. If you're going to remote places where there's no connectivity, though, it's best to download offline maps in advance.
One charge of the inbuilt battery will be enough for 5 hours of use, after which the smart binoculars will become just binoculars.
At the time of writing, Unistellar has already raised almost half of the required amount on Kickstarter, which is more than $1.2 million. Envision binoculars can be ordered for $699, but its retail price will be much higher - $1199. True, it won't go on sale anytime soon - delivery for the first backers isn't expected until November 2025.
