The Serbian Army has received the Chinese HQ-17AE surface-to-air missile system.

Here's What We Know

The information was shared by the Serbian Ministry of Defence. Earlier Serbia did not report on the purchase of these systems, so it is still unknown how many SAM batteries will be transferred under the contract. By the way, it is likely that Serbia bought HQ-17AE as an alternative to the Russian Pantsir-S1 systems. Their purchase was cancelled due to the beginning of Russia's full-scale war against Ukraine.

Flashback

The HQ-17AE is a Chinese wheeled short-range surface-to-air missile system designed to defend against a variety of airborne threats, including aircraft, helicopters, drones and cruise missiles. The HQ-17AE is based on the Soviet Tor SAM system. The system incorporates an active phased array radar, which enhances its ability to detect and track targets in complex electronic warfare environments. The HQ-17AE is capable of firing at multiple targets simultaneously.
