The NFC Forum, which includes leading technology companies such as Apple, Google and Qualcomm, is working on the next generation of NFC, which promises to greatly expand the capabilities of the technology.

Here's What We Know

One of the key features will be Multi-Purpose Tap, an option that will allow much more data to be transferred with a single tap of the NFC button. This means that in the future, a single NFC tap will be able to perform multiple operations: making mobile payments, confirming a customer's age for certain products and issuing digital receipts.

In addition, shops with loyalty programmes will be able to automatically credit bonuses for purchases and apply discounts or free offers. According to NFC Forum Executive Director Mike McCamon, Multi-Purpose Tap will greatly simplify contact-based user interactions by enabling multiple transactions with a single tap.

Interesting fact: The first NFC-enabled Android smartphone was the Google Nexus S, released in late 2010, while the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus, introduced in 2014, were the first iPhone models with an NFC chip.
