The Italian Ministry of Defence is buying an additional batch of European fourth-generation fighter jets.

Here's What We Know

We are talking about 24 Eurofighter Typhoon aircraft in Tranche 4 and Tranche 5 modifications, which will replace older versions of the aircraft in two squadrons. Unfortunately, the amount of the contract and the terms of its realisation have not been disclosed yet. By the way, Italy currently has 94 Eurofighter Typhoon fighters in service: 80 in the single-seat version and 14 in the combat trainer version.

Flashback

The Eurofighter Typhoon is a fourth-generation multi-role fighter developed by the Eurofighter GmbH consortium, which includes companies from the UK, Germany, Italy and Spain. The aircraft entered service in the early 2000s. The Typhoon is designed to perform a variety of combat missions including air superiority, interception, ground attack and reconnaissance.

The fighter is equipped with advanced active phased array array radars (APAR), fire control and avionics systems. The Typhoon can carry a variety of weapons, including air-to-air, air-to-ground missiles and guided bombs. The EJ200 engines provide high speed and manoeuvrability, allowing the aircraft to perform complex manoeuvres in combat.

The Eurofighter Typhoon is actively used by the armed forces of the member countries of the consortium and is also exported to other countries such as Saudi Arabia and Kuwait.
