Spain restores 10 Leopard 2A4s for Ukraine that were damaged at the frontline

The Spanish defence company Santa Barbara Systems has completed the repair and refurbishment of the first batch of 10 Leopard 2A4 tanks, with nine more tanks of this type to be refurbished by September 2024.

Here's What We Know

In March of this year, the Spanish government announced its intention to transfer a total of 19 Leopard 2A4 tanks to the Ukrainian Armed Forces. These tanks are being refurbished at the Seville plant. The Spanish industry has successfully fulfilled its obligations by restoring the first batch in record time - just 3 months. This rapid pace of restoration is particularly impressive given the technical condition of the tanks, which have been in storage since 2012.

During a meeting in the Ramstein format on 21 May 2024, Spanish Defence Minister Margarita Robles confirmed her intention to supply tanks to Ukraine. She used the following wording: "the first one will be ready at the end of June this year".

All of the refurbished Leopard 2A4 tanks have passed successful field tests, which means they can be used at the front. In fact, Ukraine can expect to receive these tanks within the timeframe outlined above, and possibly even a little earlier.
