Despite the war, Ukraine continues to supply aircraft engines to Turkey
Ukrainian companies continue to supply aircraft engines for Turkish attack helicopters and drones.
Here's What We Know
According to Mehmet Demiroglu, CEO of Turkish Aerospace Industries (TAI), Ukrainian-made engines are used in ATAK-2 attack helicopters and T925 multipurpose helicopters.
"Procuring engines in Ukraine is a challenging task. It keeps us on our toes. However, today Ukraine continues to make deliveries, albeit with difficulties," he explained.
It is worth noting that in 2021, the Ukrainian company Motor Sich signed a long-term contract with TAI to supply modified TV3-117VMA engines for Turkish aircraft platforms.
Demiroglu also noted that TAI was considering local production of Ukrainian engines under licence. According to him, "great progress has been made". He also said that the Turkish aviation industry is still dependent on foreign manufacturers. For example, the Anka-3 unmanned strike aircraft prototype made its first take-offs with a Ukrainian engine.
Demiroglu believes that an alternative to Ukrainian products is being developed by Turkey Engine Industries (TEI), a Turkish engine manufacturer working on the TF-6000 turbofan engine.
"Of course, we will prefer our own engines. By the end of the 2020s, we will be flying with a TEI engine or another locally produced engine. We have not yet made this decision," the Director General added.
