Microsoft adds spell checking and auto-correct to standard Notepad in Windows 11 - it took the company 40 years to do this
As they say, the day has come! Microsoft has released the latest Windows 11 update, which adds spell checking and auto-correct to the standard Notepad app. The company started testing the features back in March and is now rolling them out to all users of stable versions of Windows 11.
Here's What We Know
Notepad's spell checker works in much the same way as Word or Edge: when you make a mistake in a word, it's underlined with a red line. The only difference is that when you right-click on a misspelled word, the menu doesn't expand like it does in Word, and you have to click again to see the correct options. However, you can left-click and get one single, quick, corrected option at once.
Microsoft has also given you the option to disable spell checking depending on the type of file you have open, so you don't have to see a sea of red lines when editing .md, .srt, .lrc, or .lic files.
Notepad also has an auto-correct feature that works exactly as you'd expect: it simply replaces a misspelled word with the one it thinks is more correct. You can also disable the feature in the app's settings.
