The first PC emulator for iPhone and iPad - UTM SE - appeared in the App Store
It seems that Apple has drastically changed its policy on emulators and approved UTM SE - the first PC platform emulator for iPhone and iPad that will allow you to run old versions of Windows and macOS on your device.
Here's What We Know
Back in April this year, Apple revised the App Store rules to allow the use of game emulators. This led to the launch of several emulators in the App Store, including the popular Nintendo Delta emulator.
However, despite these changes, in June, Apple rejected the UTM SE app, a PC emulator: the company not only removed the app from the global App Store, but also from third-party app stores in the European Union.
Apple explained that only "retro game" emulators are allowed, not PC emulators, even though playing retro games is a common use of PC emulators such as UTM. This decision caused a wide outcry and potential action by the European Commission.
This weekend, the developers of UTM SE announced on social media that Apple had reversed its decision. UTM SE is now available in the App Store and will soon be available through the AltStore PAL in the EU. Apple did not provide an explanation for this decision.
It is important to note that iOS applications cannot use the JIT compiler. As a result, the functionality and performance of emulators running through UTM SE on iPhone and iPad will not be as powerful as on other platforms.
