Google has released a new watch face format, the Watch Face Format, which is mandatory for all watch faces designed for Wear OS 5. Watch faces created using the old format will not work on the new watches.

Here's What We Know

To help users weed out incompatible watch faces, the Play Store will display a warning in the details section. The warning will read: "This watch face may not support all complications."

The warning is expected to be especially useful for users who are upgrading their old watches to Wear OS 5. Google's support page clarifies that the Play Store will not even show them incompatible watch faces.

The new watch face format from Google is an XML-based standard that aims to simplify the development and support of watch faces. Although the format was introduced over a year ago, Google has only recently made it mandatory.

The changes will not affect older Wear OS watches. Users will be able to continue to use watch faces created using the old format.
