Gemini will be able to discuss complex topics thanks to new Data Commons extension

Google has added a new extension to the Gemini platform, Data Commons. This seventh extension was developed by the Google initiative that has been working since 2017 to organise the world's publicly available data.

Here's What We Know

Data Commons standardises and processes thousands of datasets from trusted sources such as the United Nations, the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics, and the US Department of Commerce. The data covers more than 200 sources and includes information on demographics, economics, education, housing, health, climate, and biomedicine. The database contains data from 194 countries.

In September 2023, Google started using large-scale language models (LLMs) that allow users to ask questions in natural language. The answers come directly from the Data Commons with links to primary sources, which ensures the accuracy of the data.

Now you can visualise data on complex topics such as climate change, the economy, and health through Gemini.

This extension is automatically enabled and works together with other Google services such as Google Flights, Google Hotels, Google Maps, Google Workspace, YouTube, and YouTube Music.

Google also announced that Gemini extensions are now available in beta for Gemini subscribers for Google Workspace, including Gmail and Google Drive. However, Workspace data will not be used to train the public Gemini model.
