Samsung aims to make the next generation of foldable smartphones as thin as the Galaxy S series
While the Galaxy Fold 6 doesn't look like the thinnest smartphone against its Chinese counterparts, Samsung plans to make its upcoming Galaxy Flip and Galaxy Fold foldable devices as thin as the Galaxy S models.
Here's What We Know
According to The Korea Economic Daily Global, the head of Samsung's mobile division has tasked engineers to develop an ultra-thin foldable smartphone. The most recent Galaxy S models are between 7.6mm and 8.4mm thick and Samsung is aiming to achieve these figures in its future foldable devices.
By the end of the year, the company is expected to introduce the Galaxy Fold 6 Ultra, which is 10mm thick and has an 8-inch screen. This will allow Samsung to compete with Chinese brands that already produce thin foldable smartphones. The Galaxy Fold 6, unveiled last week in Paris, is 12.1mm thick.
Since the launch of its first foldable smartphone, the Galaxy Fold, which was 17.1mm thick, Samsung has been constantly working to reduce the thickness, weight and increase the durability of its devices. For example, the Galaxy Fold 3 was the first foldable smartphone with an IPX8 rating, while the Galaxy Flip 6 and Galaxy Fold 6 received an IP48 rating. In the future, the company plans to improve dust and water protection, as well as the durability of foldable screens.
