While SK Hynix has already established itself in the high-bandwidth chip market with its high-speed HBM memory, Samsung plans to use CXL DRAM to meet the growing demand for high-performance memory modules needed for artificial intelligence.

Here's What We Know

Samsung is actively developing CXL DRAM memory to capitalise on the growing demand for high-performance memory modules driven by the artificial intelligence boom. The company has been developing CXL for over 10 years and introduced the industry's first CXL DRAM memory in 2021, and in 2022, Samsung launched the world's first 512GB CXL DRAM chip.

Samsung vice president Jangseok Choi said that mass production of CXL 2.0-compatible 256GB DRAM will begin later this year. The CXL market is expected to grow rapidly in the second half of this year and "explosively grow" from 2028.

CXL (computer express link) improves the efficiency of DRAM and other storage modules when used in high-performance servers, enabling significant increases in storage capacity and bandwidth. This is especially important for artificial intelligence and machine learning, which require huge processing power. Samsung is keen not to miss the opportunity and take a leadership position in this fast-growing industry.
