Social media platform Twitch has reinstated former US President Donald Trump's account, which was "indefinitely" blocked in 2021 following events at the Capitol.

Here's What We Know

The company explained the decision by saying that it believes it is important to provide opportunities for presidential candidates to directly address the audience. Prior to the blocking, Trump's team used his channel to broadcast campaign events and they can now resume this activity.

The blocking of Trump's account on Twitch, as well as other platforms such as Twitter (now X), Facebook and YouTube, was imposed after the events of 6 January 2021, when protesting Trump supporters attacked police officers, broke into the Capitol building, looted it and caused damage.

Twitch's decision comes after Meta also announced that Trump's Facebook and Instagram accounts would no longer be subject to enhanced blocking measures, arguing that all presidential candidates should have an equal opportunity on their platforms.

Despite the lifting of the blocking, Trump's account on Twitch will be subject to the platform's general community rules. A spokesperson emphasised that all channels, regardless of whether they are owned by public figures, are subject to the same rules.
