Samsung files patent for folding device in style of LG Wing

Samsung, the market leader in foldable phones with the Galaxy Fold and Flip lines, is not resting on its laurels. A recent patent application published by the World Intellectual Property Organisation (WIPO) suggests that the company may be exploring a unique folding design that combines elements of existing phones.

Here's What We Know

The patent sketches show a phone that looks ordinary at first glance, but has a rotary mechanism. The main display can be rotated 180 degrees to reveal an additional screen underneath, reminiscent of the LG Wing design, which uses an additional screen for multitasking.

Even more interesting is the hinge on the main display that allows the phone to fold in half along this line. This creates a phone with three different modes of use: standard, with a rotating display for multitasking like the LG Wing, and fully unfolded for a large, uninterrupted display.

Combined, these features create a phone with a standard display mode, a rotating secondary display mode like the LG Wing, and a fully unfolded tablet mode.

The patent also reveals the camera module in the top right corner, along with the charging port, microphone and speakers at the bottom. On paper, it's a pretty unique phone design that technically offers the experience of three foldable in one.

In standard mode, the phone is compact. The optional rotating display makes it easy to multitask. And the fully expanded mode provides a large display for comfortable viewing.

However, it is worth noting that a patent does not guarantee the release of a product. Samsung frequently files patents for innovative technologies, many of which do not reach commercial production.

It's also worth noting that Samsung recently filed another patent for a smartphone that folds three ways.
