Google Messages to replace Samsung Messages as the standard messaging app on new Galaxy models in the US

Samsung has announced that it will no longer pre-install its Samsung Messages messaging app on Galaxy phones in the US, with Google Messages becoming standard.

Here's What We Know

The move is in line with Google's drive to increase the adoption of RCS (Rich Communication Services), a protocol that offers better texting capabilities.

RCS allows you to send larger files, improves synchronisation between devices, and offers other convenient features. Google Messages, unlike Samsung Messages, provides better support for RCS, which was one of the key factors in this decision.

While Samsung Messages will no longer come pre-installed on new Galaxy phones in the US, it will still be available for download from the Galaxy Store. However, Samsung warns that some features will not be available.

The move to Google Messages as the standard messaging app may indicate that Samsung is eventually planning to completely abandon its own Messages app globally. There has been no official announcement on this yet.

In 2022, Samsung already made Google Messages the standard SMS/RCS app on Galaxy devices, but still pre-installed its own app as an option for users.

Now, starting with the Galaxy Fold 6 and Flip 6 models, Samsung Messages will be completely removed from new Galaxy phones in the US. Users of these devices will use Google Messages as their default messaging app.
