New agreement on AI regulation could be positive news for Apple Intelligence in the EU

EU countries are losing access to Apple Intelligence features, but a new agreement between the US, EU, and UK on artificial intelligence regulation may change this.

Here's What We Know

The four law enforcement agencies have agreed to adopt "general principles" to address antitrust concerns about AI products and services, although some of the language could pose potential problems for Apple.

Apple Intelligence was scheduled to launch later this year, but last month the Cupertino company announced that it would exclude EU countries from the launch. Apple cited "regulatory uncertainty" as the reason.

Later, Meta made an almost identical announcement, using almost the same words.

The governments of the EU, the US, and the UK issued a joint statement committing to adopt common principles for AI regulation:

  • The European Commission of the EU
  • The UK Competition and Markets Authority
  • US Department of Justice
  • The US Federal Trade Commission

It should be noted, however, that all three principles address issues where the EU may take a tougher stance than the US
