Google Drive adds automatically generated subtitles to videos

Google Drive now automatically creates subtitles for videos that users upload. This feature is already available.

Here's What We Know

Google uses speech recognition technology to transcribe audio, which allows it to automatically generate subtitles. For personal Google accounts, you need to manually request subtitles after uploading a video. Google Workspace users get automatic subtitles without any additional settings unless their administrators turn this option off.

How To Switch It On

To create subtitles, right-click on a video in Drive, select Manage subtitle tracks, and then click Create automatic subtitles. Alternatively, you can use the three-dot menu in the upper right corner of the video while it's playing.

For videos uploaded before this feature was introduced, you will need to manually request automatic subtitles, which may take some time. You can view the subtitles in the YouTube player by clicking the CC button.

Automatic subtitling will make it easier to search for videos by their content and increase the accessibility of media files on your Drive. Currently, only English is supported, but Google plans to add other languages in the future.
