Samsung's new OLED on Pixel 9 will be brighter than Galaxy S24

Samsung's flagship smartphone, the Galaxy S24 Ultra, features a Samsung Display M13 series display with a peak brightness of 2600 nits, which is higher than the Apple iPhone 15 Pro Max (2000 nits) and Google Pixel 8 Pro (2400 nits).

However, when viewing HDR content, the brightness of Galaxy S24 Ultra reaches only 1159 nits, which is inferior to competitors. For example, the iPhone 15 Pro Max reaches 1567 nits, and the Pixel 8 Pro reaches 1467 nits.

The reason for this is the Galaxy S24 Ultra's adaptive brightness, which limits the display's capabilities. Samsung supplies panels for the Google Pixel 8 Pro and Apple iPhone 15 Pro Max, and their displays perform better than Samsung's own smartphones.

The next step in displays is Google's Pixel 9 series, which will feature Samsung Display's M14 series panel. The Pixel 9 will have a peak HDR brightness of 1800 nits, and the Pixel 9 Pro and Pixel 9 Pro XL will have a peak brightness of 2050 nits, which is significantly higher than the Galaxy S24 Ultra.

Google is planning to release the Pixel 9 series in October 2024, and a few months later, in the winter of 2025, Samsung will introduce the Galaxy S25 Ultra with an M14 series display. Hopefully, Samsung will be able to solve the problem with adaptive brightness to stay competitive in this regard.
