Google Drive introduces Gemini sidebar integration for PDF viewing

Google Drive is expanding its PDF viewer functionality with the addition of the Gemini sidebar. Now users can view, summarise, and interact with PDF documents directly in the file viewer.

Here's What We Know

To access this feature, double-click a PDF file in Google Drive to open it in a new tab. Then click the Gemini icon in the top right corner to open the sidebar. The sidebar has a dark theme that complements the viewer interface.

The Gemini 1.5 Pro sidebar allows you to summarise long and complex PDFs, ask questions about a document, create new content based on the PDF content, and merge information from different files in Google Drive. The overall functionality remains similar to the gemini.google.com view, but with a more integrated experience.

This feature supports:

  • Scanned PDFs
  • Custom PDFs
  • Text PDFs
  • PDFs with complex tables

The update is expected to roll out in the coming weeks to Google One AI Premium users, as well as Gemini Business, Enterprise, and Education applications.
