Ukrainian F-16s receive early warning system for missile attack
Ukrainian F-16 fighter jets have received the latest Hensoldt AAR-60(V)2 missile warning systems (MWS).
Here's What We Know
According to a video posted on the official channel of the President of Ukraine, the newest Terma PIDS+ pylons can be seen. It is worth noting that the Hensoldt AAR-60(V)2 (MWS) system was developed and manufactured by the Danish company Terma, which ensured the introduction of similar systems on fighters operated by all member states of the European Air Force (EPAF).
In 2018, Denmark, Norway, the Netherlands, and Belgium ordered Terma PIDS+ pylons, which create a whole range of protection against missile threats. These countries were planning to transfer their F-16s to Ukraine, so it is not yet known which country the aircraft from which the video was made originated.
The MWS system is a vital component of advanced aircraft self-defence. It is responsible for the early detection of missiles fired by the enemy. It also helps to coordinate actions to neutralise them. The MWS consists of six sensors mounted on two pylons, providing almost complete spherical coverage and protection around the aircraft.
An important role is played by a data processing computer located in the right pylon. It transmits messages about potential threats to the Terma ALQ-213 countermeasures control system located in the cockpit.
The ALQ-213 system is designed to optimally select the most effective sequence of heat traps to be launched. These traps, which are implemented using the Flare-Up module, are released at a specific angle.
