The Opendatabot service conducted a study and found that in the first half of 2024, mortality in Ukraine was three times higher than the birth rate.

Here's What We Know

Since the beginning of 2024, 87 thousand children have been born in Ukraine, which is 9% less than in the same period last year, according to the Ministry of Justice. At the same time, 250 thousand deaths were recorded. This is 1.4 times less than in the same period in 2021, when 349,041 deaths were recorded. However, it is worth noting that 2021 was the peak year for deaths due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The largest number of babies and deaths in Ukraine were in Dnipro and Kyiv regions. Kyiv (9,000 babies), Lviv (8,000) and Dnipro (7,000) regions were the leaders in terms of births, and Dnipro, Kharkiv and Kyiv were the leaders in terms of deaths.

The number of children born in the frontline regions is consistently low: in Kherson (221 children) and Donetsk (702). In the Luhansk region, no babies were registered at all in the first six months of the year. Also, according to the Ministry of Justice, the lowest number of deaths was recorded in Kherson, Donetsk and Chernivtsi regions.
